Prescott Hill Climb 2013

On the last weekend of August the team took part in the prestigious Prescott Hill Climb. As well as displaying the car, the team also had the opportunity to drive a lap of the track in a convoy of formula student cars. Of particular note, Liverpool was awarded the prize for Best Presented Formula Student Car seeing off competition from four other UK universities. Many thanks must go to the Bugatti Owner’s Club for allowing the team to attend the event, in particular Trish Davis for organising the Formula Student contingent. Those students attending had a fantastic experience and a really great weekend.

Germany 2013

The team have just returned from the Formula Student Germany 2013 competition at the Hockenheimring. ULM008 improved on the recent success at Silverstone, achieving the teams fastest ever acceleration time. Unfortunatley, due to cooling problems, ULM008 had to pull out of the 22km endurance event during the driver change over. Despite not finishing, the team are proud to have placed 7th overall out of the UK teams.

Silverstone 2013

The team has just returned from its first competition of the year, Formula Student 2013 at the Silverstone circuit. ULM008 was one of the first five cars to be fully scrutineered, the earliest any ULM car has ever been scrutineered. After a strong performance in the static events, featuring the team's first ever cost final, the car registered the team's fastest ever acceleration time. A competitive lap time in the sprint left us in a good position for Sunday's endurance event. Unfortunately, a gear changer issue led to the engine overheating with just one lap of the endurance remaining. By the end, only 14 teams finished the endurance, with only 18, including ULM, scoring points in all events. Despite not finishing the endurance, the team finished 25th overall, 6th out of the UK teams. Though we were incredibly disappointed not to finish, this represents the ULM team's second highest points finish to date. We are now looking forward to Formula Student Germany at Hockenheim in three weeks, hoping to build on what we acheived at Silverstone.

Driver Controls

The team have received the machined components for their driver control systems. The components have arrived perfectly in time for the final build and the team wish to extend their gratitude to AMF Precision Engineering for this and all their support this year.

New Radiator

The new radiator has arrived courtesy of Aaron Radiators. The radiator is built specifically for the new R6 engine and features an angled side tank to both reduce air bypass and use the space available in the side pods more efficiently, reducing overall frontal area and drag. We would like to thank Aaron Radiators for the fantastic work, and Spal for their generous fan contribution.

Wheel Centres

The team's wheel centres for ULM008 are now complete. Being both lighter and stiffer than last year, it is one of many improvements that we hope will give us our best result yet. The team would like to thank John Curran in the School of Engineering workshop for his help with completing these parts.

Carbon Fibre Supplies

The team have recently received a large amount of supplies for carbon fibre lay-up from Tygavac. With the team's move to carbon fibre bodywork, we were in need of vacuum bagging equipment and supplies, which Tygavac have been kind enough to donate to the team. We would like to thank Tygavac for their generous contribution.

The team have just taken delivery of our carbon fibre pre-preg for ULM008's bodywork, courtesy of SHD Composites. Having used a custom coloured resin to match the team colours, we can't wait to see what the final result will be. We would like to thank SHD Composites for their contribution to this year's team.

Bodywork Mould

The bodywork mould's for ULM008 are well underway, with the first section almost ready to be used. This wouldn't have been possible without the generous support of Trelleborg, for supplying the materials, and Pentaxia, for machining the moulds.

Drexler

The team are happy to report that we have recently acquired a 2010 FSAE Drexler Limited Slip Differential. It is a great step forward for the team and will prove to be a good investment for future years. We have been delighted with the support from Drexler with regards to integrating the LSD to our car and we would like to thank Erik Gattermeier and everyone else at Drexler for providing this support and making the transaction as easy as possible.

Wishbone End Wax Patterns

The team have taken delivery of the wax patterns for our investment cast wishbone ends, courtesy of Renishaw. These have now been delivered to Tritech for casting. The team would like to thank both of them for all of their help.

St. Mary's School Visits

On Wednesday, the team travelled to Crosby to represent the School of Engineering at St Mary’s College’s 2013 Careers Conference. The event enabled young students to talk to many people about the options they have and the upcoming decisions they will soon need to make. The team would like to thank St Mary’s for inviting us to the event, and wish the best of luck in the future to all the students who attended.

Pentaxia

The team is pleased to announce a new partnership with Pentaxia, who have generously offered to machine the bodywork moulds for ULM008. Pentaxia, located in Derby, specialise in the design, development and manufacture of advanced composite components, with experience across the autosport, aerospace and general engineering markets. As the design for the bodywork nears completion, we will be working closely with Pentaxia to optimise our tooling moulds for manufacture.

Bosch CAN Workshop

Bosch invited the team to attend a CAN bus training day at the MIRA Engineering test facilities on Wednesday. Mapping the current engine control unit for the R6 is a challenge the team are currently facing and this event was a good opportunity for us acquire further understanding of the electrical system. The team also took this as an opportunity to talk to the Bosch Engineers and the other teams that they support. The team would like to thank Bosch for organising the event.

Competition Registration

The team are happy to announce our recent registration to the Formula Student UK and Formula Student Germany competitions in the coming year. As our home event, the UK competition is again the main focus for the team this year, with approximately 120 teams competing for the prize; we will need to push it to the limit to improve on last year’s great result. Last year, in the Germany competition, the team suffered a mechanical fault that left us stranded in the endurance race. This year we will be producing a more reliable car to deliver an even better performance than last year.

John Eldridge Visit and Sponsor Evening

This week, the team hosted an evening event, where, amongst others, our sponsors were invited for an unveiling of the latest ULM008 designs. As well as tours of the school and a chance to see all the cars from the team's history, it was a great opportunity to talk to our students. The team are very grateful for all the support they receive and are glad to be able to invite sponsors to such events. Thank you all for your support. The keynote speaker for the event was John Eldridge, principle engineer at Sellafield, and also a head judge at the Silverstone competition. New team members were able to get first-hand experience of what the competition is all about.

Surface Generation

The team travelled to Oakham on Monday to visit Surface Generation. After a tour of the facilities, the team were able to discuss Surface Generation’s cutting edge tooling technology and their plans for growth over lunch, as well as getting some welcome career advice too. We extend our gratitude to all of the Surface Generation team for their kind hospitality, valued advice and interesting discussion. MDA Motorsport

The team is pleased to announce a new partnership with MDA Motorsport, who will be fabricating the space frame chassis for ULM008. MDA Motorsport is local to the team, situated near Chester, and specialise in machining, fabrication and design, as well as also offering a motorsport and track day setup service. They have experience of manufacturing high end motorsport parts with proven experience on their own tarmac spec rally car – Ford Escort Maxi F2 Rally Car. Their car has been completely fabricated from a bare shell including all roll cage installation, machining of custom one-off suspension components and more.

John Eldridge visit

Design Judge and principle engineer at Sellafield, John Eldridge, visited the team recently. This was a good opportunity to discuss ULM008 and the teams approach to preparation for the design competition at Silverstone. The team are extremely grateful for the interest John Eldridge has shown in us and appreciate the time he has committed to helping us.

Team's 2nd Test Day!

The team wanted to keep the testing momentum going so quickly organised a second test day at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Speke. Again it was an opportunity for some of the senior team members to experience the thrills of driving a formula student car! The team went with a strict testing plan. The first objective of the day was to optimise the gear change system which was achieved emphatically! The second was to test a new front pull rod design! All early indications are only positive and the team are looking to test this further on the next test day! Despite the wet conditions on the day, the team came out of the second test day of the season with a string of positive results! Bring on the third!

NEC Composites Show

Some members of the team recently visited the NEC at Birmingham for the Composites Show 2012 which was part of the Advanced Engineering Show 2012. It was a chance to listen to advice from a range of composites specialists as the team look to stretch themselves to using composites on the car this coming year! It was also a great opportunity to speak to some of our existing sponsors and thank them for their continued effort in working with the team!

Running Bike

ULM can announce that our new Yamaha R6 engine is running on our DTA Fast ECU. The bike is now awaiting our student designed plenum chamber which will optimize the intake flow for the regulatory restrictor and then the engine will be optimized on a dynamometer ready for further tweaking next semester. The team would like to thank DTA for their technical support.

Bosch Test Day

After signing a sponsorship agreement with Bosch, the team attended the first hosted event of the season. All teams sponsored by Bosch in the UK were invited to make use of the Whilton Mill Karting circuit. Not only were the teams able to make use of the track for testing, but Bosch engineers were on site to provide technical advice and support. This was a good opportunity to talk to members of other teams and discuss early aspects of design and other challenges faced. We were especially grateful for the opportunity to seek the advice of other teams running the R6 engine, that will be powering ULM008. The team's would like to extend its gratitude to Bosch for hosting the event, and to the other teams present for sharing their knowledge and experience with us.

Vince Cable Visit

When Business Secretary of State Vince Cable visited the School of Engineering yesterday, the team were delighted to talk to him about the car and their most recent Formula Student season. We were particularly pleased to tell him about finishing first place in the business event at Formula Student Silverstone 2012. The Rt Hon Dr Cable MP showed great interest in the team and wished us luck for the year to come.

New R6

Following the team's plans to move to a Yamaha R6 engine this year, buying donor bikes was a high priority. During our search, the team found webuyanybike.co.uk and sellbike.com to be of great use.

Team's 1st Test Day!

Today was the first test day for the team this season at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Speke! It was an opportunity to brush the dust off the ULM007 and give some of the senior members of the team a chance to drive the car which they worked hard to build over the summer of 2012. It was also a great opportunity for the new members of the team to see how we operate on a test day! After the drive shaft failure in Germany 2012, this was our first chance to test the new drive shafts, which worked extremely well. Overall, the car ran brilliantly and all team members had an enjoyable day.

Aintree Track Day

On Saturday, the team attended a trackday at the historic Aintree circuit with last year's car, ULM007. The trackday was a great opportunity for the team to present the car to a selection of motorsport enthusiasts, ranging from casual trackday drivers to all-out race teams. The advice from such people, as ever, was invaluable. The day was also a great chance for the team's new intake of third year masters students to experience motorsport up close and for those new to the sport, it offered the chance for them to see what it is all about. The team would like to thank John Harden and the Liverpool Motor Club for having us at the Aintree Cicuit.
